Homelessness in Brooklyn is at alarming levels. Over 15,000 people are currently experiencing homelessness here, with a significant portion being women and children. Families now make up nearly 40% of the homeless population in New York City, and the numbers continue to grow. Many of the women we serve have endured trauma, from domestic violence and housing instability to systemic inequities.

We have three unique programs, designed to grow and change to meet the evolving needs of our residents…

FAMILY TRANSITIONAL SHELTER PROGRAM

The Family Transitional Shelter program creates a welcoming and safe environment for families experiencing homelessness, offering a foundation for stability and healing. Each residence, whether a congregate setting or individual apartment, is designed to be calming and homelike. The entire organization follows a formal, trauma-informed model of care, ensuring that every staff member—whether clinical, administrative, or maintenance—is trained to recognize and respond to the impacts of traumatic stress in a supportive and productive way.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING PROGRAM

Providence House operates a comprehensive permanent supportive housing program that serves individuals and families with histories of chronic homelessness, mental illness, and substance use disorders. The program spans four supportive housing facilities located in Brooklyn, providing stable housing and tailored support services aimed at fostering long-term stability and self-sufficiency. The program utilizes a trauma-informed, client-centered approach to address the diverse needs of its residents. Services include case management, mental health and substance use counseling, life skills training, and connections to other essential community resources.

WOMEN’S JUSTICE PROGRAM

The Women’s Justice Program provides comprehensive services to women involved in the criminal justice system, many of whom have experienced homelessness, substance use, and mental health challenges. The program offers an alternative to incarceration, serving women who would otherwise be detained at Rikers Island or returning from upstate correctional facilities. With a focus on gender-responsive, relational care, the program provides individualized support that helps women address the root causes of their justice involvement, including trauma, addiction, and mental health issues.
