Revival of The Journey Program: Empowering Women after Reentry
This year, Providence House proudly celebrated the re-launch of The Journey, our alumni support program designed for former residents of the Women’s Justice Program. This initiative offers a vital resource, enabling participants to stay connected with program staff, access essential services, and build lasting networks of mutual support.
“The Journey Program has
the potential to be truly transformative for our residents,” said Raquel Nicholson, Director of the Women’s Justice Program.
“It’s not just about providing resources but about fostering a community where women feel seen, valued, and empowered to build a future beyond the justice system. When our alumni stay connected, they not only find the support they need but also inspire those still in the program to believe in their own potential.
This kind of ongoing connection is crucial for building resilience, instilling hope, and creating lasting change in their lives.”
The program’s August kickoff event welcomed over 35 attendees, including both current and past participants. In collaboration with over a dozen service providers, The Journey facilitated connections to healthcare, wellness resources, housing assistance, and other vital community services, supporting ongoing stability and personal growth. he strong turnout underscored the program’s significance, highlighting how impactful these resources can be in building a supportive network beyond the immediate housing experience.
Anjelica Maria Camacho, the Outreach Coordinator for the Women’s Justice Program, shared her excitement about the implementation of The Journey and her vision for its future:
“Cis women, trans women, and non-genderconforming individuals are among the most under-served and under-resourced populations in reentry. The Journey is about creating a network of support that removes the obstacles preventing our residents from succeeding financially, emotionally, educationally, mentally, spiritually, and socially. The network we are collectively building will provide them with the tools to reclaim all the blessings that have been taken from them by the criminal justice system.”
As The Journey continues to take shape, it stands as a powerful testament to the strength, resilience, and potential of the women we serve. By extending support beyond the walls of Providence House, we are not only helping women navigate reentry—we are investing in their long-term healing, growth, and empowerment. With every connection made and every story shared, The Journey affirms that no one walks alone, and that a strong, caring community can be a catalyst for lasting change.
