Running Through the Years: Providence House at the NYC Marathon

Since the early 1980s, Providence House has had a proud history of marathoners running the five boroughs in the New York City Marathon, and this year, we continue that tradition!

Below, past runners share their stories and advice for those preparing to take on the 26.2-mile journey, offering words of encouragement that span generations of Providence House leadership and supporters.

“Here is some advice given to me that I found so useful, and gladly pass on to any new marathoner.”

  1. Trust your training. You’ve done the work, now enjoy the 26.2-mile block party.

  2. Nothing new marathon week. Save new foods (and shoes!) for after the race.

  3. Buy bodyglide and use it everywhere.

  4. Hydrate and rest. A bad night’s sleep before the race won’t ruin it, just rest up in the days prior.

  5. Taperitis is real. Find distractions during taper weeks and trust you’re still on track.

  6. Don’t start too fast. Keep your pace over the Verrazano, save that extra energy for Manhattan.

  7. Dress warm for the start village. Layers you can discard are key.

  8. Stick to your hydration plan. Know your rhythm, every few miles or every 45 minutes.

  9. Coordinate with your cheer squad. Knowing when you’ll see familiar faces can lift your spirits.

  10. Add your name to your shirt (unless you’d rather skip the extra attention).

  11. Most of all, have fun! You’ve got this, it will move you.

“Super advice, Miss Kimberly! A couple of thoughts from the old guy…”

  1. Run your own race. Even if you start with a friend, don’t let their pace dictate yours.

  2. Drink small amounts often. After the Verrazano, grab a sip every mile or two, it’ll help in those last six miles.

  3. Taper wisely. In the final week, cut mileage down to seven miles or less, no running the day before.

  4. Cherish the experience. Whether it’s your first or fifth, running through the five boroughs is always special.

  5. And finally, crush that last mile! You’ll never forget crossing that finish line.

“I ran 26.2 miles to celebrate 26 years and 2 months of Providence House, all beginning when a woman moved into PH Church Avenue on September 14, 1979.”

That milestone run captured media attention, including a Daily News feature and even a mid-race interview, as Sr. Janet represented Providence House in its 26th year.

Her advice for new runners:

  1. Trust your training. If you can run 20 miles, you can do 26.2.

  2. Join a running group. The accountability and community make training fun.

  3. Dress smart. Your body heats up fast, layers come off quickly.

  4. Write your name on your shirt. The cheers from strangers (and supporters) can be surprisingly powerful.

  5. Hydrate before and during race day. Keep fluids up in the days leading to the run.

  6. No new shoes. Break in your race pair a few weeks ahead.

  7. Keep gear light. A cap, race belt, and small bottles are enough.

  8. Enjoy it. The crowds, the music, and the energy make it unforgettable.

Sr. Mary Ross was among the first Providence House runners to take on the NYC Marathon, completing it twice in the early 1980s.

This Year’s Runners: Carrying the Legacy Forward

We’re thrilled to cheer on Katie Healy, current Providence House Board Member, and Providence House friends Lisa McKiernan and Chris Newcomb, who will run the 2025 TCS NYC Marathon on 11/2 in support of Providence House!
