The Next Chapter Begins
Every new season brings the promise of a new beginning. As summer draws to a close and a new academic year approaches, we are reminded that some of life's most meaningful journeys begin with a single step forward.
For many students, crossing the graduation stage is more than celebrating an academic achievement—it marks the beginning of a transformative new chapter. College is more than the next step in an educational journey; it is a season of growth, discovery, and opportunity. It is where knowledge expands, confidence grows, and aspirations begin to take shape. For many, it is also where they discover not only what they want to do, but who they aspire to become.
While every student's journey is unique, this milestone is especially significant for those who have overcome extraordinary challenges to reach it. This year, Providence House proudly celebrated five exceptional graduates who were recognized through the DHS Future Leaders Initiative, a partnership between the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the Human Resources Administration (HRA). The initiative recognizes graduating high school seniors living in temporary housing by providing scholarships and laptops to support their transition to college.
The students selected for this recognition demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also remarkable resilience, determination, and perseverance.
At Providence House, we believe our mission extends far beyond providing shelter. We are committed to creating opportunities that empower individuals and families to build brighter futures. Every milestone our students achieve reflects their perseverance and the strength they have shown throughout their journey. Celebrating their accomplishments is a proud moment for our entire community because we have witnessed firsthand the dedication, courage, and hard work that brought them to this point.
Today, all five graduates are preparing to begin their college journeys, carrying with them not only acceptance letters, but also stories of resilience, determination, and hope.
Reflecting on what this recognition means, Roy Jerico Paez Diaz shared:
"This program makes me feel seen and supported. Living in temporary housing didn't stop me from pursuing my dreams, and being recognized alongside other students who worked just as hard is something I'll always remember. It gives me confidence as I start this next chapter in college."
For Richard Smith Jr., the recognition represents the culmination of years of perseverance:
"Being recognized through the DHS Future Leaders Program means a lot to me. It reminds me that all of the hard work and challenges I overcame were worth it. This program has given me even more motivation to continue my education and work toward my goals."
That same commitment is reflected in the dedicated staff at Glenmore Family Residence, who have supported these students throughout their educational journeys. Their work extends beyond daily responsibilities—they serve as mentors, advocates, and trusted sources of encouragement for the young people in their care.
Reflecting on this achievement, the Glenmore team shared:
"This program means a great deal to the Glenmore team. It is incredibly rewarding to celebrate students who remained committed to their education despite the challenges of living in temporary housing.
Many of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and some have faced additional barriers related to their immigration or legal status. What makes this program especially meaningful is that the DHS Future Leaders Program recognized every eligible graduating senior, regardless of immigration status, ensuring all students had the opportunity to be celebrated."
The graduates' stories continue beyond this milestone.
Three of the five students have already transitioned into permanent housing as they begin the next chapter of their lives. The remaining two students will continue residing at Glenmore while attending local colleges until permanent housing becomes available.
It is our hope that these graduates will inspire the next generation of students at Providence House to believe in their own potential and pursue their dreams with the same resilience and determination.
Congratulations to the Providence House Class of 2026. We are proud of all you have accomplished and look forward to all that lies ahead.
