"Globally, the feminization of poverty shows us that women
are oppressed, abused, exploited, etc. because they lack
education, and in some cultures have no voice. I encourage
women of color and minorities to get empowerment through
education, because it is the only thing that makes people
viable to themselves. Education begins at home and continues
in school. It is a life long process that gives you the
ability of leadership because you are knowledgeable." |

At the heart of Providence House is a
commitment to creating hospitable, non-violent, compassionate
homes and programs where women and children can grow to their
full potential. Through the fostering of caring relationships,
the staff and core communities assist the women in recreating
lives of stability for themselves and their children, by helping
them access services, find permanent housing and, most importantly,
begin to advocate for themselves.

In most cases, the housing search is a starting point for our residents.
Our ultimate goal is to help women learn to advocate for themselves,
so they can become fully participating members of their community.
We achieve this goal by providing our residents with a variety
of services.
Providence House provides on-site case
management and housing relocation services. Our case management
staff completes an intake and assessment that allow us to develop
an individualized plan of action with residents, based on their
history, current situation, resources and goals. Dependent on
their particular needs, referrals are then made to the appropriate
community resources, which include but are not limited to employment
and training programs, medical services, substance abuse prevention
and treatment programs and mental health programs. For those
residents with children, assistance is given with school placements,
and child care and after-school programs. Where needed, specialized
therapy is also obtained to children of residents.
The housing specialist works with the
residents on the housing application process, networking with
local landlords and real estate brokers to help locate suitable
and affordable housing alternatives. The specialist also assists
the residents with the forms needed to apply for subsidies and
other housing financial assistance programs.
Our house management staff facilitates
the learning of independent living skills (cooking, cleaning,
budgeting, etc.) to assist the residents' ability to manage
their own apartment and finances when they leave Providence
House.
