HISTORY Providence House began in 1979 when four Sisters of St. Joseph offered hospitality and a place to stay to a mother who was coming out of prison and reuniting with her young child.
Many more mothers and children have followed over the past 25 years. To date, over 7,000 women and 4,000 children have lived at Providence House.
Our beginnings were very informal and focused on providing shelter and a supportive environment to homeless, formerly incarcerated women and their children.
We were guided by values of hospitality, non-violence, compassion and community.
Those values continue to motivate us today.
Our ultimate goal has been consistent throughout our history to help women become self-sufficient and recreate lives of stability for themselves and their children.
